Gail Armstrong received a master’s degree from Rhode Island School of Design in 1980 and a BFA from Hartford Art School in 1972. She taught art for over thirty years, mainly at North Kingstown High School in Rhode Island. Memberships include the R.I. Watercolor Society, Providence Art Club, Wickford and South County Art Associations, the Newport Art Museum, Newport Artists’ Guild and the Cape Cod Art Association.
Gail has exhibited and received awards in numerous open juried shows, including “Best of Show” in “Scenes of R.I.-2005”, an exhibit sponsored by Governor Carcieri and the R.I. State Council on the Arts. In “Scenes of RI-2006”, her painting received an honorable mention and was chosen for inclusion in the 2007 calendar. She also received an honorable mention in the National Watermedia Competition at the R.I. Watercolor Society, and had another painting chosen for the cover of their 2006 calendar.
As an artist member of the Providence Art Club, Gail has studied with Al Albrektson, Allen Johnson and Anthony Tomaselli. She has also been painting for over 25 years with Natalie Pfanstiehl’s “plein aire” group, and has attended workshops by Ted Minchin, Tom Sgouros and Betty Lou Schlemm.
Gail works in oils and other media but prefers watercolors for painting outdoors for their portability and ability to quickly capture the light. She usually works on location for most of her landscapes, but finish work is often done in the studio. Gail enjoys exploring a variety of subjects and often combines watercolors with other drawing and painting media.
