Artist's Statement
The monotypes and pastel paintings in this show celebrate the water views, fields, beaches, and woods of South County, Rhode Island.
Against the backdrop of a South County blue sky with puffy clouds or a silvery dawn over a salt pond or a winter sunset, South County provides me with inspiration.
While the locales in my landscape are specific, and perhaps familiar, my goal in this show is to evoke more than specific representation. I hope to provide the viewer with the sense of the peace and tranquility I find in South County throughout its various seasons.
My monotypes are paintings on plexiglas plates that are transferred to paper through the use of an etching press. Each is a separate, unique work that cannot be duplicated as in other printing techniques. The painting is created on a plate using rollers, brushes, and objects such as Q-tips, corrugated cardboard, and rags that provide texture and markings to the paint. The plate is then placed on the bed of an etching press with the dampened paper over the plate. As the plate and paper go through the press, the image is transferred to the paper. The resulting monotype has a different feel and texture than a painting because of the effect of the paint pressed into the paper.
For my pastel works, I use traditional chalk pastels which allow me to capture the texture, brilliance, and variety of this medium. I tend to use many layers of colors in my work until I obtain the desired result. I use both soft and hard pastels, the soft pastels for thick luscious colors, and the hard pastels for drawing and definition. The image usually develops slowly as the layers blend into what will become the finished work.
Monotypes and pastel paintings uniquely permit the artist to make the intangible beauty of South County into a tangible presence. This challenge is my joy in working with such media.
